چکیده

A key feature of modern broadband networks is their ability to provide stringent Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees to different classes of users. A primary QoS parameter is the Cell Loss Probability (CLP), whose typical values can be very small and therefore difficult to estimate through standard Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, since long run times are required to achieve accurate results. In this paper we propose two different techniques to efficently simulate a single server queueing system, loaded with Long Range Dependent (LRD) traffic. The two techniques rely on dynamic Importance Sampling (IS) and Hybrid Monte-Carlo (HMC) respectively. In this extended abstract we briefly describe the proposed approaches together with the main theoretical results achieved in this work (Section 2). In Section 3, we conclude by showing some preliminary simulation results.

Efficient Rare Event Simulation for Failure Problems in Random Media

We study rare events associated to solutions of elliptic partial differential equations with spatially varying random coefficients. The random coefficients follow the lognormal distribution, which is determined by a Gaussian process. This model is employed to study the failure problem of elastic materials in random media in which the failure is characterized by that the strain field exceeds a h...

Description and Simulation of Gust Front Wind Field

An efficient model for simulating gust front wind field is proposed based on the time-frequency description of the wind field. Traditionally, transient or non-stationary random processes are simulated to account for amplitude modulations invoking envelop processes to shape these modulations. In this study, a time-frequency based scheme is introduced to account for both modulations in amplitude ...

New Bounds and Approximations Using Extreme Value Theory for the Queue Length Distribution in High-Speed Networks

In this paper we study P({Q > x}), the tail of the steady state queue length distribution at a high-speed multiplexer. The tail probability distribution P({Q > x}) is a fundamental measure of network congestion and thus important for the efficient design and control of networks. In particular, we focus on the case when the aggregate traffic to the multiplexer can be characterized by a stationar...

Estimation of Rare Event Statistics in Data

The estimation of the statistics of rare events is inherently costly, simply because of their rarity. This paper describes some recently developed techniques for the efficient simulation of rare events in telecommunications networks. The work described is split into three broad themes: the optimal simulation of buffer overflows in queueing networks, reverse-time modeling of random processes and...

Rare Event Simulation

This paper deals with estimations of probabilities of rare events using fast simulation based on the splitting method. In this technique, the sample paths are split into multiple copies at various stages in the simulation. Our aim is to optimize the algorithm and to obtain a precise confidence interval of the estimator using branching processes. The numerical results presented suggest that the ...
